About Us

“The best part of waking up…”

Ten years ago, a group of young men took their musical talents to Champaign with an idea … to create a new flavor of a cappella that would excite the taste of peoples’ ear drums. That vision led to the creation of Chai-Town. Though it is considered a band, Chai-Town is a brotherhood of musicians that entertain their fans as they follow their love of music. For the past decade they have brewed cups of music that were “Good to the Last Drop” and have left their fans saying “Aaaah … Arohanam”; Yet, overtime, the scent from this Champaign brew emanated throughout the nation as people began to crave the taste of South Asian a cappella. From California to the Big Apple, audiences have tasted their famous blend of contemporary music with a hint of flavors from the homeland. With new arrangements and singers, their “Fresh Brewed” flavor will never cease to entertain you. Each generation of Chai-Town has always produced a blend for your ear drums to digest so see if you can smell the scent of their newest brew coming to a campus near you.

The 2011-2012 year was the 10 year anniversary of the group. Last year we performed at universities and venues in Iowa, Chicago, and Kansas for a variety of events such as shows and competitions. We also had the pleasure of releasing our 3rd Studio Album, multiple music videos, and being featured in the Times of India! As 2012-2013 year approaches, Chai-Town is excited to see what this year holds!

Chai-Town is a completely student-run, non-profit group of 14 members and many alum, each of whom has a passion for music. We love sharing this passion with our friends and family, our community, and the world.

Sunil is a senior majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology with a pre-med focus. He comes from the great town of Libertyville (a.k.a. L-Ville). Sunil, other than singing, also plays piano, guitar, trumpet, and baritone. Sunil likes all types of music…except for country. He loves to just jam out and make music with others. He also likes to play soccer, volleyball, basketball, flag football (pretty much any sport), run, and weightlifting. He loves to dance like no other, and just chill and hangout with friends. Sunil likes to listen to The Fray, John Mayer, and good Hip-Hop, but he practically listens to everything…except country.
Jeswin is a sophomore from Darien, IL. Though he is studying actuarial science, he is currently majoring in success. When not practicing for Chai-Town, this Malu can be generally found baking cookies or learning how to ride an elephant. Jeswin listens to all kinds of music including Mongolian Throat Singing (Hoomii).  His greatest weaknesses are kittens and Kryptonite. After college he plans on either being a house husband or the president of the United States in 2032. Jeswin was a boy but became a man when he made Chai-Town, and for that he was given a nice back massage and a warm cup of chai.
Aalok is currently a junior in neuroscience possibly doing pre-medicine. Singing is his only passion and is pretty much his entire life. In his third year on Chai-Town and first year as president, he can truly say that CT has been one of the biggest blessings in his life. There are very few things in life that he loves more than his love for performing beautiful music with his brothers on stage. If you ever get a chance, please make sure to introduce yourself to Allen because he would absolutely love to be your new friend!!!

Angad Uday is a fresh man off the boat majoring in Civil and Environmental Engineering. He’s the friendly neighborhood Indian boy who has an ardent love for the math and science. But somebody snatch that calculator away, hand him a microphone and he’ll sing his heart out. When not singing, Angad plays the guitar and keeps consistent with his great fetish for soccer. He can most confidently convince any soccer follower to ditch the team they support and join the Chelsea band wagon. Angad enjoys listening to all types music except for pop that is. No wonder he cringes when Katy Perry comes on the radio. His diverse interest in music ranges from Hans Zimmer to Iron Maiden.
